This is the story of Solomon Northup who was a black freeman up north in the 1800s. He was drugged and sold into slavery where he remained until his rescue 12 years later.
This book wasn't exactly an easy read for me. I know that people in the US think that slavery was so long ago that it doesn't matter anymore, but books like this put a human face on it. I wish that everyone who thinks that slavery should be swept under the rug was made to read this book.
It's hard to imagine that it was once a common thing to rip babes from their mother's arms, husbands from wives and sell them to the highest bidder like they were animals. knowing how real it was for the slaves is even harder.
If you want to read an accurate account of slavery I'd recommend picking up this book.
